French Intent

Key principles that underpin our French Curriculum:

  At Norton we believe that learning a foreign language allows children to develop an understanding of different cultures. It can be the key to opening up interest and confidence in communicating with people from all around the world.

   We want children at Norton School to see that foreign language learning is developing the art of communication; understanding that even if they do not know everything they can see or hear, they are still able to respond and communicate.

Norton’s vision for the acquisition of a foreign language is that pupils:

•  Understand the value of learning an additional language
•  Understand how cultures differ but can all co-exist harmoniously
•  Develop confidence in an additional language and respond to written and spoken language
•  Recall grammatical structures in different tenses and make links to the English equivalents
•  Firstly speak, then  write at increasing length in an additional language

Through the high quality first teaching of French taking place we will see the impact in the following ways:

• Children will be able to communicate with each other in French.

• Children will become aware that a language has a structure, and that the structure differs from one language to another.

• Children will develop their language through development of the four key skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

• Children will enrich their language learning by developing an understanding of the French culture.

• Children will learn how language skills can be applied to a range of languages.

• Children will transfer to KS3 effectively and successfully and will be well prepared to continue and develop their language skills.
